Home Improvement FAQs

How do I determine if an area should be repaired or totally renovated?

A. Usually cost is the main determinant. Some repairs will cost less than a renovation. A renovation is usually called for when more than one aspect of the area needs updating or repair. The need for new appliances may be all the kitchen needs, but if the floor is damaged and the countertops are wrecked then a full on renovation may be in order.

What improvements can be made to increase the curb appeal of my home?

Making a house more appealing from the street will draw in buyers and increase the overall value. Some projects can be intensive such as raising the roof to change the profile of a home, replacing windows, installing new siding, adding a covered entryway, or adding a deck, sunroom, or porch. Other projects are a little easier and quicker like painting the trim, adding shutters, adding gabled dormers, adding skylights, and fresh landscaping.

Should I do renovations and home improvements myself or hire a contractor?

If the project is within your skill level. Most projects require the assistance of another person or two, so those people as well need to know what they are doing. Many projects like tiling and dry wall can be done by the average homeowner with some basic education. Try taking classes offered at local hardware stores to determine if the project is within your scope. If there is any doubt, hire a professional, your home is worth too much to risk unnecessary damage and your safety is worth it too!
